Why We Started With “Aviator”

There are certain images that exist permanently in public memory.

A pair of tinted glasses.

A courtroom photograph.

A grainy television interview replayed for decades.

You recognize it instantly, even before you remember why.

That uncomfortable familiarity became the starting point for File 001.

Not because we wanted to glorify a serial killer.

Not because we believe evil deserves admiration.

But because true crime, as a genre and cultural phenomenon, forces people to confront something darker: our collective obsession with trying to understand the unknowable.

The first release from exhibit a., Case 001-1-A “Aviator,” explores that exact tension.

The design is intentionally restrained.

Minimal.

Cold.

Almost procedural.

We wanted it to feel less like merchandise and more like recovered evidence from an archived investigation. Something cataloged. Stored. Processed. Filed away.

The name “Aviator” comes from one of the most recognizable visual identifiers tied to the case, the glasses that became inseparable from the media image surrounding Jeffrey Dahmer. Over time, those frames stopped being an accessory and became shorthand for an entire era of fear, media saturation, and fascination.

That transformation interested us.

How does an ordinary object become culturally haunted?

How does a face become a symbol?

How does media repetition turn fragments of a case into permanent public imagery?

Those questions sit at the core of exhibit a.

We are not interested in shock graphics.

We are not interested in exploitation for the sake of exploitation.

What interests us is the strange intersection of memory, evidence, media, and mythology.

True crime stories often become larger than the people involved. The details evolve into symbols. Newspaper clippings become artifacts. Court exhibits become icons. Entire generations recognize images from cases they were never even alive to witness.

“Aviator” was designed to capture that feeling.

The shirt itself reflects that philosophy through construction and presentation. Heavyweight Sirospun cotton. Structured fit. Minimal layouts. Evidence-inspired formatting. Clinical typography. Everything intentionally understated.

No loud graphics.

No exaggerated violence.

No caricatures.

Just atmosphere.

File 001 marks the beginning of what we hope becomes an evolving archive of culturally recognized cases, unexplained disappearances, evidence-room aesthetics, and the uncomfortable permanence of public memory.
