The Story Behind the Name

Some names belong to a person. Some names belong to history. And some names belong to everyone.

Few names are more recognizable, or more mysterious, than Jane Doe.

For generations, the name has appeared in police reports, court documents, hospitals, and newspaper headlines. It exists as a placeholder, used when identity is unknown, withheld, or simply not yet discovered.

But somewhere along the way, Jane Doe became more than a legal term.

She became a symbol.

Where Did "Jane Doe" Come From?

The origins of the name stretch back hundreds of years.

In old English legal proceedings, fictitious names like John Doe and Richard Roe were used to represent parties in property disputes. By the nineteenth century, John Doe had become the standard stand-in for an unnamed man.

Eventually, "Jane Doe" emerged as the female equivalent.

Today, the names are used throughout the United States and much of the world to identify unknown individuals, protect privacy, and preserve anonymity during investigations.

Yet for many, the name carries a deeper meaning.
